Florida

We bought an underwater camera, snorkels and masks and had the best time.

We saw so many more animals than we would have seen without the snorkels and masks, we were so glad that we bought them.  During our week stay we saw all kinds of fish and birds.  We had pelicans land in the water and grab fish right in front of us.  We found a baby octopus which suctioned onto our hands.  There were so many conchs crawling on the ocean floor leaving paths behind them.  On our last day I found a giant conch covered in barnacles, we named him Frodo and took his picture and then moved him into deeper water where no one would step on his pointy self.  He must have been pretty old.  None of the other conchs were anywhere close so his size.  Schools of manta rays swam around us as they paced up and down the shore line.  We saw a bunch of sting rays and tried to stay clear of them.  Ben got stung by one which was painful but he still didn't want to leave the beach.  Mostly the water was perfectly calm but there was one rough day.  All the surfers and a kite border came out and I got pretty tumbled in the waves.  There must have been a storm somewhere else causing it because we had beautiful weather.  We had so much fun, the week went by so fast.  We hope to go again next year.

Constellation Scarf

After tons of time and tons of work the Constellation Scarf is now in the shop.  I am so happy with how if turned out.  I love the extra large size that is great for wrapping around my neck and especially appreciate it now that the temperatures have dropped here in NYC.  I have worn this scarf everyday since it was finished and plan on wearing it all fall and winter.

The Constellation Scarf was inspired by classic depictions of the night sky and its constellations. The scarf illustrates the major constellations of the the Fall sky in the northern hemisphere in white against a bright blue background and bordered by a deep grey.
This scarf is a large square and measures 44 inches by 44 inches. This scarf was illustrated and designed by me in my Brooklyn studio and digitally printed onto silk in California.

Take a look at the other scarves in the shop as well.

Honeycomb Statement Necklace

I am busy working on a bunch of pieces. I had made a large honeycomb necklace a long while ago but I was not quite happy with it so I never put it in the shop. I am having another go at it and hopefully I will be able to fix all the things I didn't like about the first one. I am happy with how it is coming along so far.

Haircut

I chopped my hair and donated 11 inches to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths.
The program takes hair donations and makes wigs for women fighting cancer.
It feels really great to be part of it.  Also, I am loving my new short cut.

Marbling

I had been wanting to try marbling for a while. I finally got all the supplies together to try it out. Since it was a first attempt I just used paper that I already had around the house. I tried computer paper first to get the hang of the process and then tried watercolor paper, blank card stock and origami paper.

I am going to use the marbled origami paper to wrap up some future orders in my shop.

To make the marbleized effect you float ink on top of the water and when you are happy with the design you lay your paper on top of the water and the ink transfers to the paper.

The process is really easy and very fun. I think it is impossible to get a bad result. There are many techniques you can use to make designs in the ink. I experimented with dripping the inks with paint brushes one after another, swirling the inks together and raking them with a fork.

I am looking forward to playing around more with marbling. I got some special copperplate paper I am excited to try out and I am going to experiment with fabric as well.

Everything in my house may end up marbled.

Constellation Scarf

My newest scarf design is in the works.  This one is going to be an extra-large 44 X 44 inch silk square.  I cannot wait to get these printed so I can wear one.
I drew all the constellations and stars based on vintage star charts.  It was a lot of work, many many hours of drawing, coloring and perfecting, but I think it was worth it because I am thrilled with how it came out.

Voice Tunnel

On Saturday we got up early in order to head up to the Park Avenue Tunnel to experience the installation
Voice Tunnel by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.

You enter to flashing lights down the tunnel with the sounds of many voices in short bursts.  In the middle of the tunnel there is a button where one at a time each person holds down and says what they wish.  Your voice then travels down the tunnel stopping at each arch of lights.  Ahead of us a few children shrieked into the microphone and we could hear their screams travel down the tunnel.
At my turn I said "All mimsy were the borogoves" from Lewis Carroll's Jaberwocky poem.  We followed our own voices for a while as they traveled down the tunnel.  When you go close to a speaker you can hear the individual voice but when you move into the middle of the tunnel and walk down it all the voices come together.

At the end of the tunnel you come out right in front of Grand Central.

This Saturday the 17th is the last day to see Voice Tunnel, I recommend getting there early.  We arrived at about 8 am and only had to wait about 20 minutes to sign the waiver form and enter the tunnel.  When we walked by again around 10 there was a really long line.
