Stone Setting

In stone setting class we have been learning many different types of settings for many types of stones. Each setting has to be approached a different way. Each one has to be precise and exact. At times it can be very frustrating. So much of stone setting is the set up and I always just want to get to it.

With the style of my work I think I will end up using the flush setting the most often. I set three garnets into my large pebble ring. No help, no problems, no mistakes. I think I am finally getting the hang of it.

Stone setting is hard.

My stones always end up crooked.   

These are two different settings we are working on in class, both are shared prong settings.

Everything has to be perfect and precise.  I am finding that I am more interested in irregular and organic.  

I am thinking about getting some rough diamonds 

Flush Stone Setting

I am taking a stone setting class and I am hoping to incorporate more stones into my jewelry.

Stone setting is all about the set up.  Getting the right tools, measuring everything, lining everything up, making sure everything is straight.  You have to be very precise and exact to make the stone fit in the setting perfectly.

The first thing we are learning is flush setting, it looks simple but is actually one of the more difficult settings.  In the flush setting the stone is level with the metal setting instead of coming over the surface.  I really like the look of it.  It is really tough to do; I have a lot of practicing.

When the stone clicks into place it feels like a real victory.
